Ayesha Gulalai refuses to leave seat and claims forming splinter group of PTI

News Analysis |

Ayesha Gulalai, the PTI dissident announced to the media today that she would form a splinter group of the party while reiterating charges of corruption, harassment, and incompetence against the chairman, Imran Khan. She appeared before the Election Commission to respond to the reference filed in order to de-seat her from the National Assembly.

Gulalai continues to defame Imran Khan and the PTI, it is not clear why she has not resigned from her seat. If she insists on remaining in the party, her claims that women are not safe in PTI will gain little mileage

Under Pakistani law, Article 63 A (1) of the Constitution, any individual that has been elected on a political party ticket, has to leave that seat once they resign from that party or party disciplines them and removes them. As a formality under the law, the ECP has up to 4 weeks before removing the parliamentarian. It is usually done so immediately.

PTI has sent a notice, “In furtherance thereof and in compliance with the requirements of Article 63 A (2) of the Constitution, this declaration is being forwarded to you as well as the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chief Election Commissioner for further action in accordance with the Constitution,”

After receiving the responses from the counsels of Ayesha Gulalai and PTI, the ECP hearing was adjourned until the 26th of September. A four-member bench headed by Ghaffar Soomro heard the case during which, Gulalai termed the reference against her as based on dishonesty.

Imran Khan alleging him of sending inappropriate text messages and harassing her. She also asserted that female members’ honor is not safe at the hands of Khan and his associates

She said that other dissenters to include Akbar S Babar, Justice Wajih and some MPAs were ready to join her in the group.“We will soon hold a meeting to decide the future course of action, and give a date for a rally,” she told media.

Ayesha Gulalai surprised the media last month when she appeared out of the blue and went on an accusation spree against his chairman, Imran Khan alleging him of sending inappropriate text messages and harassing her. She also asserted that female members’ honor is not safe at the hands of Khan and his associates. Subsequently, Gulalai dithered, backtracked and to-date has not furnished evidence to back her allegations.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Gulalai took on Khan once again.”Money of people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was spent on NA-120 by polls by the PTI. Imran Niazi should think over why did he lose the by-election in Lahore,” she said using Khan’s tribe name.

She again repeated her earlier allegations against CM KPK, Pervaiz Khattak. She claimed that the Etsehab Commission will not take Khattak to task for his corruption because it is under his influence.

She also flayed Khan for inducting stalwarts from other parties.“How can he talk about the poor and the middle class while making an alliance with billionaires and feudal lords,” she said naming Nazr Gondal, Babar Awan, Firdous Ashiq Awan and Aleem Khan.

Although Gulalai continues to defame Imran Khan and the PTI, it is not clear why she has not resigned from her seat. If she insists on remaining in the party, her claims that women are not safe in PTI will gain little mileage. Neither has she not provided her phone for the forensic study to substantiate her claims. Add the discrepancies in her statements and interviews over the past month showed, she has quite a lot of explanation to do. As things stand, Gulalai may find it tough to retain her NA seat if she carries on her diatribes against Imran Khan.
