Cambridge University Press is asking people around the world to submit their stories about inspiring teachers, as the publisher reopens its Dedicated Teacher Awards for 2020.
Open for nominations between 1 October and 29 November 2019, the global competition recognizes teachers for the hard work they do every day. Students, teachers and anyone with an inspiring story about a current primary or secondary teacher, are encouraged to take part.

At the close of the nomination period – 29 November 2019 – a panel of educational experts will choose their top six nominations based on the impact the teacher has had on their students. These teachers will feature on a thank you page at the front of every new Cambridge University Press Education textbook from May 2020. They will also win class sets of books or digital resources, an invitation to the Cambridge Panel, and a host of other prizes.

The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite story when the finalists are announced on social media on 20 January 2020. The Press will announce the overall winner on 3 February 2020.
‘Teachers say and do life-changing things every day – often without realizing it,’ explained Michael McGarvey, Director Education, Cambridge University Press. ‘This could be something as simple as a kind word at a difficult time, or explaining a concept in a way that suddenly makes everything click into place for the student. For that, we’d like to join with people around the world to say thank you together.’
The 2019 Award
The 2019 Dedicated Teacher Awards received just under 4,000 nominations from 75 different countries. Six finalists – from Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Australia – were put to a public vote that saw Math and Accounting teacher Ahmed Saya, from Cordoba School for A-Level in Karachi, being announced the winner.
‘All teachers are very dedicated,’ commented Saya upon winning. ‘We work to ensure our students become better students – not only academically, but in all fields of life. This is our responsibility, and it is fantastic that we have this award for raising the profile and importance of teachers’ role.’
“Teaching is not a job, it is a responsibility and this responsibility does not end when the class ends,” said Saya. “I don’t want to just cover the syllabus, it is my responsibility to also teach students character, ethics, and morals. I believe every child deserves a bright future and I am grateful for whatever role I can play to help them achieve this,” he added.
