Can Taking CBD Help In Preventing Illnesses Caused by Virus?

The recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has scared the world into submission. Now, many people are thinking of different ways to prevent their immune systems from succumbing to this illness and other viruses. One potential solution that comes to mind is cannabidiol (CBD). But, can CBD help prevent diseases caused by viruses?

What Is CBD?

First, it’s crucial to be knowledgeable about the ins-and-outs of CBD before you can know for sure if this natural substance can avoid viruses.

CBD is an organic chemical compound or cannabinoid in the Cannabis Sativa plant. It shares the same source as over 100 other cannabinoids, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC, on the other hand, is the active component in many marijuana strains. THC is also responsible for giving users mind-altering or psychoactive effects called “highs”.

Some individuals might assume that CBD can get you high since it comes from the same source as THC. However, CBD is a non-psychoactive compound. In other words, it won’t promote that “stoned” sensation if you use it.

How Does CBD Work In The Body?

CBD works with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). This intricate network of neurotransmitters and receptors is responsible for maintaining the normal functions of the body. The body already has cannabinoid receptors spread throughout the whole nexus. You can find these components in the immune system and the central and peripheral nervous systems.

This organic compound serves as a “mediator” to the ECS and its receptors. Hence, it doesn’t directly affect the body to promote healing. Instead, CBD “tells” the body to use its immune functions more efficiently than usual.

Many pharmaceutical drugs, on the other hand, push the body into a healing state. But, this forceful method can also expose the body to adverse effects. However, since CBD doesn’t force healing, it doesn’t create a high risk of users experiencing side effects, as long as they take the correct dosage.

However, keep in mind that the time it takes for the positive effects of CBD to surface depends on certain factors. For example, use a CBD tincture sublingually, and you may experience the results in a few minutes. But, products like CBD gummies may require about 15 minutes to an hour before you can feel their benefits.

Can CBD Prevent Viruses?

Since CBD can “tell” the body to heal, does that mean it can protect your system from viruses?

The answer to that question is, “Maybe.” Specific cannabinoids, which may include CBD, can help combat particular viruses, at least in a controlled environment.

Some studies like a 2017 review stated that CBD might help prevent the spread of viruses in mice or monkeys. The viruses studied by the researchers included mouse hepatitis C, herpes simplex virus (HSV), and influenza viruses.

However, the number of controlled CBD tests for humans with viruses are only a few at best. Nevertheless, a silver lining exists as specific cannabinoids may inhibit the replication of some infections, such as the betacorona virus (MHV). But again, the results require additional conclusive evidence at the time of writing.

Perhaps the main issue at hand is the lack of sufficient information. CBD may help prevent some viruses, but not all.

For example, CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, and some viruses need inflammation to survive. For the illnesses that cause and need inflammation, the use of CBD-infused products might help reduce the severity of the contamination.

Can CBD Protect Against The COVID-19 Virus?

COVID-19, the coronavirus taking the world by storm, infects the body by entering healthy cells. Think of this virus as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” It invades the body by disguising itself in healthy cells, making its detection quite tough until the symptoms start surfacing.

CBD may help support the immune system, but the chances of the body getting infected by the COVID-19 virus still exist. This organic compound may heighten the security of your internal systems to be on the lookout for suspicious behaviors.

But, remember that CBD isn’t a “cure-all” drug. Don’t assume that using this organic compound can treat all illnesses, especially the COVID-19 virus. You should still play your part in enhancing your body’s immune functions by living a healthy lifestyle to combat this disease properly.

Conclusion

CBD may help prevent illnesses caused by viruses, but the evidence on that subject is inconclusive as of now. This natural compound may protect the body from some viruses, but not all. It would still be in your best interest to live a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risks of contracting illnesses from your surroundings.
