Changes in PTI’s Sindh chapter: a way forward to ensure Tabdeeli

News Analysis |

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced a reshuffle in its Sindh chapter. PTI has emerged as the most powerful political force in the largest city of the country e.g. Karachi in the general elections back in July. According to media reports, former Sindh governor Mumtaz Bhutto’s son Ameer Bux Bhutto has been made the president of PTI Sindh, while MPA Haleem Adil Sheikh has been given responsibility as PTI Sindh general secretary.

However, MPA Khurram Sher Zaman has been made president of PTI Karachi chapter. These changes have been made after the approval of party chairman and current Prime Minister Imran Khan. It is important to mention here that a day earlier, the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly Firdous Shamim Naqvi stepped down as the president of the PTI Karachi chapter.

After the lackluster results, PTI’s Vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi confessed that the party had not focused on Sindh but, he vowed, from now on his party will particularly concentrate on Sindh in order to bring change in the province. The change in leadership of the Sindh chapter is supposedly a step forward in the PTI’s plan to bring Tabdeeli in Sindh.

The PTI lawmaker stated the reason behind this as that he wanted to focus all his attention on a resolution of the issues facing the province in his capacity as the opposition leader in the provincial legislature.

After their appointment, Mr. Amir Bakhsh Bhutto and Haleem Adil Sheikh jointly thanked Imran Khan for entrusting them with new organizational responsibilities. Both the leaders are said to be experienced and well-aware of the political dynamics across Sindh.

“We will fulfill all the expectations of our leadership,” they said, adding that they would organize the party on union council level in the next three months. “We will finish all that is lacking in local bodies elections. Party workers are PTI main strength. We will give priority to our workers. We will work hard and convey the message of chairman PTI to each and every part of Sindh,” vowed the two PTI leaders.

Interestingly, Sindh is being ruled by the Pakistan Peoples Party for almost last 15 years. But the province has remained underdeveloped throughout the PPP’s tenure. There have been massive cases of corruption and illegal activities in Sindh and the government always guarded the wrongdoers. Recently, in an interesting development, the Sindh local government department has reverted 11 officials from BS-17 and BS-16 to BS-5 and BS-4.

The BS-18 legal adviser Mukaram Khan has been reverted to BS-5 Typist, BS-17 health director Rafique Ahmed Rajput to BS-5 Junior Clerk, BS-17 taxation officer Abdul Wahab Rajput to BS-1 Naib Qasid, BS-17 Prosecuting Officer Altaf Baig to BS-5, BS-17 Chief Fire Officer Muhammad Yonus to BS-5 and BS-17 Assistant Director Health Aqeel Ahmed Khanzada to BS-6.

According to media reports, former Sindh governor Mumtaz Bhutto’s son Ameer Bux Bhutto has been made the president of PTI Sindh, while MPA Haleem Adil Sheikh has been given responsibility as PTI Sindh general secretary.

PTI could not perform well in the interior Sindh for reportedly not being able to hold meetings across the province. After some dismaying results, PTI’s Vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi confessed that the party could not focus on Sindh but, he vowed, now his party will particularly focus on Sindh to bring change in the province. New leadership in Sindh chapter is supposedly a step forward in the PTI’s plan to bring Tabdeeli in Sindh.

While PTI performed beyond expectations in Karachi, it could not work its magic in interior Sindh. Some of the reasons behind this have been given are the PTI’s inability to hold meetings across the province, the PPP’s reliance on the Benazir Income Support Program, poor candidate selection among others.
