Chaudry Nisar’s supporters burning Pervaiz Rashid’s posters highlights PML-N’s internal strife

News Analysis |

The supporters of PML (N) Leader Chaudhry Nisar led a procession against fellow PML (N) member Pervaiz Rashid. This is in the backdrop of increasing verbal duels between the two leaders. Protesters gathered in Union Council Dhok Munshi and raised slogans against Rashid.

The protest came days after Nisar lashed out at Rashid for criticising him. Nisar had said that if the premier allows making the Dawn Leaks report public, it would expose the former information minister. The locals set fire to the poster of Rashid and chanted slogans in favour of Nisar.

“Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan contested the Punjab Assembly seat in 1985, 1988, 1990 and 2013 without the electoral symbol of [a] lion and won it by the grace of Almighty,” read the statement.

The animosity between the bitter rivals, former federal ministers Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Pervaiz Rashid has escalated as the two Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders continued accusing each other of deceiving the masses.

Last week former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan tried to convince party leaders to make the Dawn Leaks report public to expose the role played by former information minister Pervaiz Rashid in the episode. This statement was made by Nisar’s spokesperson after Pervaiz Rashid had suggested Nisar quit the party since he had criticised it during decisive moments.

Nisar’s spokesperson later called Rashid a compulsive liar and added that “And just because of these two characteristics, he is posing as the Aristotle of PML-N these days”.

The protest came days after Nisar lashed out at Rashid for criticising him. Nisar had said that if the premier allows making the Dawn Leaks report public, it would expose the former information minister.

Nisar’s spokesperson speaking outside an accountability court in Islamabad then responded to Rashid’s claims that Nisar had never won an election without PML-N’s electoral symbol.

“Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan contested the Punjab Assembly seat in 1985, 1988, 1990 and 2013 without the electoral symbol of [a] lion and won it by the grace of Almighty,” his statement said.

His spokesman then added that the committee that was formed to probe the Dawn Leaks issue had brought to light the lies told by Rashid. Nisar’s spokesman then stated that Rashid should put his focus on publicizing the Dawn Leaks report and abstain from making irrelevant statements.

PML-N seems to be crumbling from the inside as high-level politicians like Nisar and Rashid are going after each other by making horrid statements and even initiating in protests to spite one another.
