Court imposes fine on Meesha Shafi in defamation case

The Session Court on Wednesday has charged singer Meesha Shafi with a fine of Rs.10, 000. The Session court has charged the singer for employing delay tactics in the case as Shafi’s lawyer failed to attend the hearing of the defamation case filed by Ali Zafar on Meesha Shafi.

Ambreen Qureshi, the counsel of Ali Zafar blamed Meesha Shafi’s disappearance from the hearings of the case as a delaying tactic. The Lahore High Court has also ordered to conclude the case by April 15th. Ali Zafar had filed a defamation case against Meesha Shafi after she accused him of sexually harassing her. Ali Zafar filed a defamation suit against her and demanded Rs.1 million along with an apology. Zafar was of the view that Meesha Shafi has damaged his reputation and that she must present evidence for her claims.

A defamation suit was filed against Meesha Shafi as she failed to apologize and delete the tweet dated 19th April 2018, within two weeks of the notice being served. Singer-cum-actor Meesha Shafi has appointed Muhammad Ahmad Pansota and Nighat Dad as legal counsels to oversee issues pertaining to her sexual harassment claim against Ali Zafar.

Meesha Shafi in her Twitter post had alleged that Ali Zafar had subjected her to sexual harassment of physical nature several times. Meesha Shafi said, “I have been subjected, on more than one occasion, to sexual harassment of a physical nature at the hands of a colleague from my industry: Ali Zafar.”

“These incidences did not happen when I was young, or just entering the industry. This happened to me despite the fact that I am an empowered, accomplished woman who is known for speaking her mind! This happened to me as a mother of two children.”

I feel betrayed by his behavior and his attitude and I know that I am not alone.” Ali Zafar categorically denied all the allegations and announced to respond the allegations with a legal notice.
