Eight-year-old Afghan boy dances to Afghani song after getting new prosthetic leg

News Desk |

A video of a five-year-old Afghan boy, Ahmad Rahman went viral on social media as he could be seen gleefully dancing in the hospital after getting the prosthetic leg. Ahmed had his leg amputated after he was shot in his right leg when he was just eight months old.

Ahmad was shot during a war that broke out between the Taliban and the Afghan government in the Logar province. He is amongst thousands of Afghan children who have been made victims of the deadly war and had received artificial limbs because of war injuries. He and his sister Salima were injured four years ago.

His sister recovered from the injury but Ahmed lost his right leg. The footage filmed by physiotherapist Mulkara Rahimi at the International Committee of Red Cross orthopaedic Clinic in Kabul shows the young boy dancing as he was being fitted with his new leg, and actually his fourth as they have to be replaced with his growing height.

Ahmad wanted to show off his leg to the staff and nurses at the hospital. The video garnered more than 12,000 views within an hour. The little Ahmad Rahman caught the world’s attention as he receives numerous messages of love and kindness from people on social media.

Rahimi aimed her phone at the boy who danced in a circle, laughing and spinning with joy. She then posted his video on her social media account that was later shared by another staffer. Ahmed was overjoyed when he watched his video and beamed it again and again. He then ran to his mother and the nurses to show his video.

“I want him to go to school and become a doctor or a teacher,” said his mother, Raesa, during their visit to the centre Tuesday. Like many Afghans, she uses one name. “I am so happy,” she said. “He is a good kid.”

The video gained more traction after Roya Musawi the ICRC spokesperson in Kabul shared the video on Twitter and other social media pages of ICRC.
