“I have no political agenda,” says CJP Nisar

News Analysis |

The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Saqib Nisar has remarked on Monday that he has nothing to do with politics. He is there to ensure cheap justice and basic human rights to every citizen, he added. The CJP was hearing a case regarding the construction of Rawalpindi’s Mother and Child Hospital.

The CJP recently visited the hospital along with the Awami Muslim League Chief Sheikh Rasheed. The CJP’s visit along with a politician drew criticism from different segments of society, suggesting the top judge was favoring Sheikh.

Explaining his visit to the hospital on the AML chief’s request, the chief justice said that he had no political affiliation with Rasheed. “We went for the sake of masses, not for anyone’s campaign,” he said. The followers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) were not happy over the CJP’s visit to the hospital and targeted him for being with their political opponent.

The top Judge vowed that further delay will not be tolerated in this regard. The CJP also asserted that the Supreme Court will monitor the construction now, noting that there will be no funds delay this time around.

During the hearing on Monday, Sheikh Rasheed told Justice Nisar that a certain group of individuals was running a campaign against him to malign him. To this, the chief justice responded saying that yesterday, a perception was created as if he had gone there on someone’s campaign. “Sheikh Sahib, you have your own politics; I have nothing to do with that,” he told the AML chief.

It is important to note here that Justice Saqib Nisar has directed the relevant authorities on Sunday to complete the construction of Rawalpindi’s Mother and Child Hospital in 18 months. Moreover, as a two-member bench headed by the chief justice heard the case related to the hospital, officials of the PWD, Nespak and other relevant departments. During the hearing, the Chief Justice lamented that the hospital’s construction has been delayed for 10 years.

He visited lower courts and realized that there were millions of cases pending across the country. Without an active CJP and efficient judicial system under his supervision, this is not possible to ensure justice across the country.

But at the same time, the CJP is facing political opposition from the PML-N. The party is not happy since the SC gave verdict against Nawaz Sharif who was found to be untruthful and dishonest during the Panama Papers Case. The politics of confrontation by Nawaz Sharif and his party have significantly isolated them, senior leaders like Nisar Ali Khan always opposed any clash with the state institutions.
