Limping Maxwell thrashed double century

It was over, but not done yet, when Australia found themselves 96 for 7. The hope was Maxwell, and he delivered big time. The time was running out. Zampa, with a bat in his hands, was once outside the boundary line to replace the injured Maxwell. But Maxwell has something different in his mind. He was creeping, feeling the pain of cramps, and stood there.

Maxwell’s 202 was the first-ever double-century scored by a non-opener player. He also became the first Australian player to hit a double-century. This was also the first-ever double-century scored in a run chase.

When Australia came to bat, they were chasing the modest target of 295. They had a good batting lineup but were missing Steve Smith. Within the powerplay, they lost four wickets, leaving Maxwell on the crease with Labuschagne. But things got worse when Australia was 91 for losing seven wickets after 18.3 overs.

Maxwell thrashed them all over the park

At that time, Cummins, the Australian skipper, joined Maxwell, and together, they put up a magnificent partnership of 202 and saw Australia over the line. Australia chased down the target in 46.5 overs with three wickets in hand. Maxwell made 201 runs from 128 balls. He hit ten sixes and 21 fours in this sizzling knock. Cummins played a significant role, although he scored 12, facing 68 balls.

During his innings, Maxwell got multiple chances. Earlier in his innings, he was dropped by Mujeeb at short fine leg. Then, confusion between Captain Shahidi and Rashid gave Maxwell a second chance. An LBW decision, which he, when reviewed, was overturned. All these little chances proved very hurtful for Afghanistan as Maxwell thrashed them all over the park.

Earlier on, in the Afghanistan innings, Ibrahim Zadran scored a fine hundred. He remained not out on 129. Contributions from Rashid and other players helped Afghanistan to post 295 for the loss of 5 wickets on the board.
