Malaysian Heavy Metal band uses music to spread Islam

A Malaysian band gains international fame for their unique angle: The Muslim heavy metal band breaks stereotype as they base their songs on Islamic teachings and principles.

The name Al Farabi Band is used in honor of the Islamic scholar, Abu Nasr Al Farabi who was an intellectual researcher and inventor in the knowledge of Islamic philosophy, science and music. The stringed instrument like Gambus and the acclaimed writing on music, Al Muziqa Al Kabir is especially synonym with Al Farabi. Due to the fact that his role and contribution in the music field is exceptionally massive, hence weaving a trend in the music world itself, Al Farabi Band is extremely proud to be named after this celebrated scholar.

Al Farabi Band is established on March 1st 2009 strictly embracing the three principles which are music, message and image. There are five members in Al Farabi Band, consisting of Nazri as the main guitarist and vocalist, Rina as the bassist, Samuel as the keyboardist, Ameerul as the drummer and Nasaie, who is also the band’s vocalist. They are all professionals who hail from a company that develops flight simulation software.

It is their passion for music that has led this group of men and woman to fully utilize music as a means to convey and communicate the messages of perjuangan, humanity and divinity. Since the messages that were conveyed is highly spirited and exerts motivation, hence it seems only right that the type of music to be put forth in their songs should be new age progressive rock.

Even though the band plays this genre of music, their appearance and image however is extremely unique where they appear to be donning the serban and full hijab which is unusually different compared to other rock bands. According to the band, this image was born out of pride towards the scholar Abu Nasr Al Farabi who also donned the serban, thus creating a trend.

Given that the messages brought forth by the band is based on righteousness and divinity, their image and manner of conduct must also be parallel and in line with the messages communicated through their songs.

As far as their involvement in the music world is concerned, Al Farabi Band has been appearing in public through live appearances, print and electronic media.

Apart from that, they have also organized Al Farabi Battle of the bands and live in person to provide opportunities to unknown musicians to realize their talent.

In the event of Al Farabi Battle of the bands, a different approach in performance has been taken where the performers play songs based on the concept of divinity, fighting spirit, humanity and love and care whilst instilling the messages of the music in living up to the Islamic syariat.

In its early appearance, Al Farabi has produced an EP album that contains 5 songs during the month of Ramadhan in 2010, followed by the appearance of “The Album” which contains 14 songs, drawing an enormous reaction and received countless of positive feedback from its exclusive sale online. Currently, Al Farabi Band is in the process of completing its latest album that will be featuring 8 songs in the album called Radiasi 1400.

The third album is due to be in the market early October 2011. Without a doubt, this band possesses an exceptional and unique difference from other Nasyid artistes and rock bands out there, seeing that Al Farabi Band is a representative of both worlds.

At the present time, Al Farabi Band is collaborating with Malaysia’s Iron Lady, Datuk Dr. Maznah Hamid in producing motivational songs in series. In addition to that, Al Farabi Band will be active in promoting their latest album in their road tours series around the world.
