A political war of words erupted between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) following the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections, as Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz urged PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to accept the party’s electoral defeat instead of alleging rigging.
In a strongly worded video statement issued on Tuesday, Maryam Nawaz dismissed the PPP’s claims of electoral manipulation, insisting that the results reflected the will of the people. Her remarks came shortly after Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari accused the PML-N and state institutions of undermining democracy during the electoral process.
The exchange followed the announcement of unofficial and provisional results, which showed the PML-N winning nine of the 13 constituencies contested in the Mirpur Division during the first phase of the AJK polls, while the PPP secured four seats.
Maryam Rejects Rigging Allegations
Responding directly to Bilawal’s criticism, Maryam Nawaz said the PPP should have accepted the electoral outcome “with an open heart” instead of resorting to allegations of rigging.
“Crying will not help. The PPP should have accepted its defeat with an open heart,” she said.
Rejecting accusations of electoral fraud, the Punjab chief minister maintained that there was no evidence of rigging against PML-N candidates.
“The decision in an election is made by the people, not by the state,” she stated, adding that those raising allegations of electoral manipulation were themselves involved in electoral malpractice.
Maryam emphasized that respecting the public mandate was essential for strengthening democratic traditions and urged the PPP leadership to undertake self-accountability instead of blaming others for its electoral performance.
Bilawal Questions Democratic Process
Earlier in the day, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari criticized the conduct of the AJK elections while addressing a workers’ convention in Muzaffarabad.
Bilawal questioned whether the political situation in Azad Kashmir could genuinely be described as democratic, arguing that the state needed to decide whether national interests or the interests of the ruling PML-N were being prioritized.
The PPP chairman maintained that his party’s candidates had secured public support consistent with voters’ expectations and claimed the election results did not accurately reflect the popular mandate.
His criticism intensified political tensions after the first phase of polling, with the PPP alleging irregularities in the electoral process despite the PML-N’s decisive lead in the contested constituencies.
PML-N Credits Public Support for Victory
Expressing gratitude to voters, Maryam Nawaz said the election results demonstrated the people’s confidence in the PML-N’s development agenda.
“The people have voted for development,” she said, adding that the party would honor the commitments it had made to the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
She asserted that the PML-N’s electoral success was the result of public trust rather than any external influence, reiterating that democratic decisions are ultimately made by voters.
Maryam Targets PPP’s Governance in Sindh
In addition to rejecting the PPP’s election claims, Maryam Nawaz criticized the party’s governance record in Sindh, where it has remained in power for the past 17 years.
She advised the PPP-led provincial government to focus on improving sanitation, law and order, and road infrastructure instead of questioning the election outcome in AJK.
The Punjab chief minister also criticized Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s election campaign, saying he had failed to highlight the performance of the Sindh government or present a clear roadmap for the future.
According to Maryam, voters in AJK were seeking better healthcare facilities and improved public services rather than political rhetoric.
“People in AJK were demanding better healthcare facilities, while those whose own roads are broken could not improve roads in AJK,” she remarked.
Federal Ministers Defend Electoral Process
Separately, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal also rejected the PPP’s allegations of rigging, describing Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s statements as “undemocratic and inappropriate.”
Addressing a joint press conference with Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, Iqbal described the PML-N’s victory as a genuine reflection of the people’s mandate.
He said the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir had demonstrated their commitment to peaceful and democratic politics by participating in the electoral process.
According to Iqbal, voters compared the governance records of the PML-N and the PPP in the provinces they administer before casting their ballots.
He argued that the electorate had made its decision after evaluating the performance of both parties.
Shehbaz’s Gesture Cited as Democratic Example
Highlighting what he described as the PML-N’s democratic approach, Ahsan Iqbal recalled that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had congratulated the PPP after its electoral success in Gilgit-Baltistan.
He suggested that political parties should demonstrate similar democratic maturity by accepting election outcomes rather than questioning the credibility of the process without evidence.
Iqbal also congratulated the AJK election authorities and law enforcement agencies for ensuring that polling across the Mirpur Division remained peaceful, orderly, and transparent.
Political Contest Likely to Continue
With the first phase of the AJK Legislative Assembly elections concluding, the sharp exchange between the PML-N and the PPP signals that political tensions are likely to persist as the remaining phases of the electoral process move forward.
While the PML-N has portrayed its performance as a clear endorsement of its development agenda, the PPP continues to question the integrity of the polls, setting the stage for further political confrontation in the coming days.
