Nawaz Sharif takes a jab at Imran Khan and PTI

News Analysis |

Deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif criticized his opponents for not showing a spark of decency while addressing a party rally in Haripur on Saturday. Sharif said that all those people who abuse were gathered against him on one stage. He was referring to Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s (PAT) rally in Lahore. Nawaz said that people have rejected the politics of accusations, in a reference to the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).

‘He will go to jail himself,’ Sharif said while referring to Imran Khan. He said that PTI failed to bring any changes to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) despite making several promises.  Sharif claimed that the politics of PTI has been rejected by the people. In response to Imran Khan’s ‘laanath’ to the assembly, the PML-N chief said that Imran Khan curses the same assembly for which he contends elections and draws a salary from.

No change of tactics was seen from the PML-N even after threats from the PTI and PAT. PML-N appears confident that it will steer away from the crisis created by the ‘All Parties committee’ against the Model Town Killings.

Continuing his rhetoric against the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Sharif said that he salutes those judges who declared Imran Khan ‘sadiq and ameen’. He claimed that Imran himself accepted that he was the owner of Niazi Services, an off shore company, but no cases were filed against him. Sharif against insisted that not a single rupee of corruption was proved against him and he was disqualified over an Iqama (work permit).

Nawaz Sharif’s daughter, PML-N leader, Maryam Nawaz also addressed the public rally in Haripur. She asked Imran Khan not to cry over the upcoming elections because empty chairs do not give votes, in a reference to PAT’s Lahore rally. ‘Cursing the parliament is equivalent to cursing the people,’ Maryam asserted. She also said that when Imran Khan was on a container, Nawaz Sharif was working on China-Pak Economic Corridor (CPEC).

In response to Imran Khan’s ‘laanath’ to the assembly, the PML-N chief said that Imran Khan curses the same assembly for which he contends elections and draws a salary from.

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz repeated the same anti-judiciary and anti-PTI rhetoric in the Haripur rally. Nawaz Sharif claimed that he was disqualified over an Iqama but didn’t refer to any of the corruption cases going on against him in the accountability court. Being the head of the ruling party in Punjab, the chief of PML-N didn’t assure any justice for the victims of Model Town Killings and didn’t pay any heed to the demands of the protesters in PAT’s Lahore rally.
