Is Tourism in Pakistan Dangerous?

We traveled to Pakistan inĀ December 2017 to help with an NGO that is running development projects for the poorest of Lahore. Many of our friends and family thought we were crazy to go to Pakistan because it was so dangerous.

So we decided to go out and see if it was as dangerous as people said to be a tourist in Lahore, Pakistan.

LahoreĀ is theĀ capital cityĀ of theĀ PakistaniĀ province ofĀ Punjab. It is the second-most populousĀ cityĀ inĀ Pakistan afterĀ Karachi.Ā The city is located in the north-eastern end of Pakistan’s Punjab province, near the border with theĀ IndianĀ state ofĀ Punjab. Lahore is ranked as aĀ beta world city and is one of Pakistan’s wealthiest cities with an estimated GDP of $58.14 billion as of 2014.

Lahore is the historic cultural center of theĀ Punjab region and is the largestĀ PunjabiĀ city in the world.Ā The city has a long history and was once under the rule of theĀ Hindu Shahis,Ā Ghaznavids,Ā Ghurids, and theĀ Delhi Sultanate.

Lahore reached the height of its splendor under theĀ Mughal Empire, serving as its capital city for a number of years.

The city was captured by the forces ofĀ Persian AfsharidĀ EmperorĀ Nader Shah during hisĀ invasion of the Mughal Empire. The city was then contested between different powers before it became capital of theĀ Sikh Empire, and then the capital of Punjab underĀ British rule.Ā

Lahore was central to the independence movements of bothĀ IndiaĀ andĀ Pakistan, with the city being the site of both theĀ declaration of Indian Independence and theĀ resolution calling for the establishment of Pakistan.

Following theĀ independenceĀ of Pakistan in 1947, Lahore became the capital of Pakistan’sĀ PunjabĀ province.

Lahore is one of Pakistan’s mostĀ liberalĀ and cosmopolitan cities.Ā It exerts a strong cultural influence over Pakistan.Ā Lahore is a major center for Pakistan’s publishing industry and remains the foremost center of Pakistan’s literary scene.

The city is also a major center of education in Pakistan,Ā with some of Pakistan’s leading universities based in the city.Ā Lahore is also home to Pakistan’s film industry and is a major center ofĀ QawwaliĀ music.Ā

The city also hosts much ofĀ Pakistan’s tourism industry,Ā with major attractions including the famedĀ Walled City, numerousĀ SikhĀ shrines, and theĀ BadshahiĀ andĀ Wazir KhanĀ mosques.

Lahore is also home to theĀ UNESCOĀ World Heritage SitesĀ ofĀ Lahore FortĀ andĀ Shalimar Gardens.
