Tragic Bus Accident Claims 20 Lives in Diamer, Gilgit Baltistan

In a tragic incident reported by police to Geo News on Friday, a passenger bus careened off a narrow mountain road in Diamer district, Gilgit Baltistan, resulting in the loss of 20 lives and injuries to 21 others. The accident occurred around 5:30 am at the Yashokhal area along the Karakoram Highway. The bus, en route from Rawalpindi to Gilgit, was carrying 38 passengers.

Upon receiving the report, rescue teams were promptly dispatched to the site. The injured individuals and the deceased have been transported to a hospital in Chilas. Among the casualties, three women have been identified by the health department director.

Diamer Deputy Commissioner Fayyaz Ahmed informed Geo News that the rescue operation, including the involvement of army helicopters, has been successfully concluded. Five of the injured passengers are in critical condition, with two transferred to Gilgit city for treatment. The DC assured ongoing communication with the families of the victims.

The cause of the accident, speculated to be overspeeding or a misjudged turn, occurred approximately 20 kilometers from Chilas city. Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif extended condolences and prayers for the swift recovery of the injured, directing authorities to provide necessary medical assistance. Gilgit Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan echoed these sentiments, urging immediate medical aid for the injured and imposing emergency measures at Chilas hospital, as announced by the GB government spokesperson.
