Twitter fails to take action against Trump nuclear threats

Qaiser Sajjad |

People all over the world are discussing American president Donald Trump’s tweet of January 2nd, which states:

“North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”

liberals instead of complaining to Twitter must appeal to the American voters because Trump has not appeared from the vacuum but he is the representative of the majority.

The liberals are demanding the removal of Trump’s twitter account by the Twitter administration on the grounds of Twitter’s policy about hateful conduct as written explicitly on the Twitter site:

Examples of what they do not tolerate includes, but is not limited to behavior that harasses individuals or groups of people with:

  • violent threats;
  • wishes for the physical harm, death, or disease of individuals or groups;
  • references to mass murder, violent events, or specific means of violence in which/with which such groups have been the primary targets or victims;
  • behavior that incites fear about a protected group;
  • repeated and/or or non-consensual slurs, epithets, racist and sexist tropes, or other content that degrades someone

If a layman analyses this tweet, it will be clear that it is not only threatening in tone but its implication is much more devastating because these words are not written by a common person but by a person who has the power to do this.

To give more power to the powerful to share their threats instantly”. This will be more realistic in the present scenario.

Twitter instead of defending its policy played the role of a president’s spokesperson by stating that tweets are permitted because of “newsworthiness” and “public interest”. Thus, Twitter has given a license to Mr. Trump to say whatever he wants on their website because it will be “newsworthy”.

It would be interesting to note that Twitter was not designed as a news media of powerful people because privileged statesmen already have various mediums to disseminate their opinion. They are broadcast live globally by media channels because of their newsworthiness.

References to mass murder, violent events, or specific means of violence in which/with which such groups have been the primary targets or victims.

The Twitter logic does not relate to its mission statement, which states, “To give everyone power to create and share ideas and information, instantly, without barriers”. It is high time for Twitter to change its mission statement by rephrasing it “ To give more power to the powerful to share their threats instantly”. This will be more realistic in the present scenario.

Moreover, liberals instead of complaining to Twitter must appeal to the American voters because Trump has not appeared from the vacuum but he is the representative of the majority.
