General Asim Munir assumes charge as 17th COAS of Pakistan

The outgoing Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa handed over the baton of command to the newly appointed 17th Army Chief General Asim Munir.

The change of command ceremony is currently underway at the General Headquarters at Rawalpindi where the outgoing Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Bajwa has handed over command to the new COAS, General Asim Munir.

The outgoing Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa handed over the baton of command to the newly appointed 17th Army Chief General Asim Munir.

According to the details, General Qamar Javed Bajwa arrived at the venue along with his successor General Asim Munir after they visited the Yadgar-e-Shuhda. Both Gen Bajwa and Gen Munir laid a wreath at the Yadgar-i-Shuhada (Monument to Martyrs) in GHQ and offered fateha.

The change of command ceremony is being attended by Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, and former army chiefs.

After arrival, Gen Bajwa reviewed the guard of honor presented to him for the last time as the chief of army staff.

Addressing the ceremony, the outgoing army chief congratulated his successor for being promoted as head of the army.

“I have full faith that under his leadership army will conquer new success and his appointment will prove to be positive for the country,” said Gen Bajwa. He added that he was happy to know that he was retiring by handing the army to an able officer like him.

Lt Gen Asim Munir served as the Quartermaster General in the Pakistan Army. He was appointed DG of the Military Intelligence in early 2017 and then ISI Director General in October 2018. Lt-Gen Munir is the recipient of the Sword of Honour from the 17th course of the Officers Training School in Mangla. Also, he is the recipient of the Hilal-i-Imtiaz.
