A widening gap between peak electricity demand and available generation has triggered sudden, unannounced power outages, creating serious hardships for citizens.

Although the government introduced a limited load-shedding schedule on Tuesday to manage fuel shortages, the situation on the ground has been far worse. According to The News, actual outages in many areas are double or even triple the officially announced duration.

To curb the use of costly imported fuels and avoid a steep hike in electricity tariffs, the Power Division had announced a daily suspension of supply for around 2.25 hours between 5pm and 1am. However, reports from consumers paint a different picture: urban residents are facing three to four hours of outages, while rural areas are enduring as much as six to eight hours without electricity each day.
The worsening energy crisis has become particularly frustrating for city dwellers. Khalid Ali, a resident of the Walled City, described the erratic supply, noting that within just a few hours of peak demand, his area experienced three separate one-hour outages between 5:15pm and 9:15pm.
In other neighbourhoods, the situation appears even more chaotic. Shafiq, a resident of Iqbal Town, said that after 8pm, electricity cuts occur every 15 to 20 minutes without any warning. He stressed that such unpredictability makes normal urban life nearly impossible.

Frequent power fluctuations have also sparked concerns about damage to expensive electronic appliances. Many residents report that conditions have deteriorated sharply in the past 24 hours, leaving households struggling without water and unable to carry out basic daily tasks.
Officials, however, defend the outages as a necessary measure to reduce reliance on expensive fuel and prevent a surge in electricity prices. For the public, already dealing with rising temperatures and prolonged darkness, the gap between official claims and reality is becoming increasingly difficult to endure.
The crisis is further aggravated by a lack of coordination between electricity supply and municipal water schedules. Since water pumps depend on electricity, unpredictable outages often coincide with water supply hours, leaving many households unable to store water.
As a result, what began as a power shortage has escalated into a full-blown water crisis, with families struggling to meet basic needs like hygiene and hydration during the sweltering evenings.
