Nawaz Sharif to get medical treatment in Pakistan?

With Shehbaz Sharif as the new prime minister, conditions for PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif's return seem very favorable. As per the latest details, he is expected to return after Eid.

Shortly after PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif became the prime minister, reports emerged of PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif’s return.

Senior PML-N leader Mian Javed Latif, while talking to a private media channel, said that Nawaz Sharif will return after Eid. Additional media sources also said that the former prime minister will return to Pakistan and face the courts. As for his health, he will undergo any remaining medical treatments in Pakistan.

In 2018, an accountability court sentenced Nawaz Sharif to seven years in prison in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference. Meanwhile, a court also sentenced him to a total of 11 years in prison and slapped an £8 million fine (Rs1.3 billion) in the Avenfield properties reference.

Subsequently, in 2019, the Lahore High Court (LHC) after suspending his sentence, allowed Nawaz to go abroad for medical treatment.

Pertinent to mention, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif left for London in 2019 on the basis of medical treatment. However, he has not returned since. On several occasions, PML-N has hinted at his return. Now with his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif officially in power, Nawaz Sharif is expected to return to Pakistan after eid.

On the other hand, there are also reports stating that Nawaz has no plans to return soon despite Shehbaz’s election as PM. According to the media report, the Sharif family thinks that his early return will establish the PTI propaganda that he does not have serious health issues.

Nawaz Sharif’s health issues

Earlier this year, a medical report advised the PML-N supremo against traveling back to Pakistan.

In short, the medical report noted that Nawaz Sharif is under a lot of stress and the stress of returning to Pakistan can “further compromise his cardiac status”. In fact, any long-distance travel could negatively impact his health.

The medical report had raised quite the storm in Pakistan as many labeled it as “fake”. For starters, Dr. Fayaz Shawl, Director of Interventional Cardiology US wrote the medical report. Regarding this, former SAPM Dr. Shahbaz Gill sarcastically said that all the heart doctors in the UK have died.

Ever since Nawaz Sharif went to London, medical reports outline his ailing health and advise against any heavy traveling. As a result, his return to Pakistan (where he faces corruption charges) kept getting delayed.
