Ousting CM Parvez Elahi: Punjab’s political crisis deepens

Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman is expected to denotify Chief Minister Parvez Elahi after he did not seek a vote of confidence from the provincial assembly.

The political crisis in Punjab continues to intensify. The ruling coalition has decided to de-notify Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi and a notification in this regard may be issued at any time.

The PML-N has started consultations with its allies at the Governor House as part of their plan to forestall the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly. On the other hand, the Punjab Assembly Speaker Sibtain Khan has written a letter to President Dr. Arif Alvi to formally request to remove Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman.

According to the details, the speaker highlighted the unconstitutional steps of the Punjab government in his letter and requested the President to remove Baligh-ur-Rehman.

He decried the “misconduct” of the Punjab governor and said that the governor is the representative of the president who should be stopped from making such steps in violation of the constitution.

The political crisis in Punjab was triggered when PTI Chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan announced the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly to make way for early elections. In a bid to prevent this from happening, the PDM coalition government sprang into action and decided to bring the no-confidence motion against Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi.

A separate no-trust motion was also submitted against PA Speaker Sibtain Khan and Deputy Speaker Wasiq Abbasi under Article 53 of the Constitution.

The crisis has deepened after the governor and PA speaker rejected each other’s rulings regarding the no-trust voting and summoning of a special session for a vote of confidence yesterday.

Baligh-ur-Rehman had summoned a session on Wednesday at 4pm for CM Elahi to take a vote of confidence. However, defying his directives, the PA speaker termed the order unconstitutional and adjourned an ongoing session till Friday.

As per the latest developments, Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman is expected to denotify Chief Minister Parvez Elahi after he did not seek a vote of confidence from the provincial assembly. The notification for removing CM Pervaiz Elahi was prepared and signed by Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman.
