Pakistani celebrities slammed Veere Di Wedding actor for calling Pakistan a ‘failing state’

News Desk |

Pakistani celebrities schooled Veere Di Wedding actor Swara Bhaskar for her unwelcoming remarks consisting of calling Pakistan a ‘failed state.’ Her ignorant comments stirred a whirlwind of criticism in Pakistan as commoners and Pakistani celebrities alike marched to confront Swara Bhaskar on social media.

A video floating on Twitter shows Bhaskar speaking to film critic Rajeev Masand about the ban on ‘Veere Di Wedding’ in Pakistan, where Bhaskar called Pakistan a ‘failing state.’

“For some reason, I have to keep answering for that. What do you expect from a state that’s run by Sharia Laws?” she further said.

“They’re a non-secular state. I’m not surprised at all. Why should we hold up Pakistan, which is a failing state — I don’t understand why we keep taking pleasure and feeling a sense of self-worth from all the silly things that happen in Pakistan. Apologies to all my Pakistani friends right now… Rest assured, Pakistanis have way worse vocabulary than we do. I know.”

It was the Pakistani celebrities like Mehwish Hayat, Urwa Hocane, Gohar Rasheed and Armeena Khan who stepped into school Swara Bhaskar.

Some of them said her remarks have actually made them feel good about the ban on the movie.

Urwa Hocane referred to Swara Bhaskar’s appreciation comments for the country during her visit to Pakistan in 2015. Urwa Hocane stated Pakistan is a progressive country and her contradictory remarks are a reflection of her as a failed person.

Armeena Khan called Swara Bhaskar’s comments a negative public relations strategy. Armeena Khan trolled Bhaskar for shaming Pakistanis for having the ‘worse vocabulary’ in her interview.

After confronting a massive criticism, Swara Bhaskar posted a clarification message on Twitter. Bhaskar said she criticized the state/government authorities and not the common people. She said Lahore is still her favorite city.

The Censor Board of Pakistan banned ‘Veere Di Wedding’ for its vulgar content last week. The Bollywood celebrities are often heard passing scornful statements despite the amount of love and appreciation they receive from Pakistan. From banning Pakistani celebrities in Bollywood to calling Pakistan for every act of terror in India, the Indian celebrities are in alignment with the narrative of the hardliners and extremist.
