The California State Senate passed a resolution to establish a sister-state relationship between California and Punjab till December 2026. Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar shared the news in Pakistan on Twitter.
A press release was published on the official website of Assembly-member Chris Holden, who introduced the resolution. Senator Sydney Kamlager read out the resolution, which received a majority of 36 votes.
According to details, the sister-state relationship between California and Punjab will have a positive impact for both regions. It will promote mutual trade and commerce and increase the potential for educational, environmental, and cultural relations.
“Punjab’s capital, Lahore, is a cultural, historical, economic, and cosmopolitan centre of Pakistan where the country’s cinema industry and much of its fashion industry are based,” the press release added.
It noted that agriculture is still the largest sector of Punjab’s economy and a breadbasket for the country, similar to California’s position in the US.
Punjab governor appreciates the move
In his message, the governor Punjab thanked California for formally declaring Punjab as its sister state. Moreover, he said the move will promote multi-dimensional collaboration between the two.Punj
ThankU California for formally declaring Punjab Province as a SISTER state of California via ACR 104. Great outcome of my last visit of USA in 2021 when the BILL was moved in State of California Assembly. This’ll promote multi-dimensional collaboration. The governor also noted that the resolution was the outcome of his visit to the USA in 2021 when the State of California Assembly moved the bill.
This is indeed welcoming news for Pakistan. To clarify, apart from tech innovations, agriculture is a significant sector in California. In 2020, California generated around $49.9 billion in agricultural cash receipts with the highest valued commodities being dairy products, specifically milk, almonds, and grapes. That same year, the value of California’s agricultural production and processing industries represented 2.6 percent of the total state GDP.
California’s success in agriculture is due to the availability of natural resources like land, water, and climate. Such favorable conditions are also present in Punjab which also thrives on agriculture.
