Supreme Court Orders Imran Khan’s Transfer to Shifa Hospital for Treatment

The Supreme Court has ordered the transfer of PTI founder Imran Khan from Adiala jail to Shifa International Hospital for medical assessment and treatment until September 16. The court also sought his complete medical records and directed authorities to facilitate his family meetings while ensuring his medical condition is not politicised.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the authorities to transfer incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from Adiala jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical assessment and treatment. The former prime minister is to remain at the hospital until the next hearing on September 16.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed, comprising Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim, issued the interim order while hearing petitions concerning Khan’s medical treatment and meetings with his family members. The petitioners included his sister Dr Uzma Khan, lawyer Uzair Bhandari and PTI leader Mashal Yousafzai.

Khan to Be Shifted Within Two Days

According to the written order, Adiala jail authorities must arrange Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital within two days. The court directed that the former premier be moved under tight security and that all necessary arrangements be completed without affecting law and order around the hospital.

The court also ordered the formation of a medical board to assess and treat Khan. The board will include a physician, general surgeon, internal medicine specialist, eye specialist and cardiologist, in consultation with Shifa International Hospital’s management.

Dr Uzma Khan and Khan’s personal physician will be allowed to remain associated with his medical examination and treatment. Dr Faisal Sultan was also permitted to remain involved in the process. The costs of treatment and facilities at the hospital will be borne by Khan or his family.

The Supreme Court further directed that Khan’s medical report should not be used for political purposes and warned that any violation of its directions could lead to the withdrawal of facilities being provided to the PTI founder.

Court Seeks Complete Medical Record

During the hearing, the Supreme Court expressed concern over the submission of only a summary of Khan’s medical history and ordered authorities to provide his complete medical record.

A two-page report submitted by the Adiala jail superintendent contained details of 39 medical check-ups conducted by different specialists between November 4, 2023, and August 10, 2026. The report said Khan had been examined by several government doctors and that records of the consultations were maintained by jail authorities.

The report also stated that Khan had received treatment from ophthalmologists in Islamabad and Rawalpindi for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), an eye condition previously diagnosed in him. According to the report, vision in the affected eye had almost returned to normal.

The bench also discussed concerns about Khan’s pulse and heart condition. Justice Waheed noted observations in the report indicating that his vital organs had started being affected. Justice Afghan referred to a recommendation for angiography and asked whether the procedure could be conducted inside the jail. The Islamabad advocate general said it could be performed at a hospital outside the prison.

Family Meetings Also Under Scrutiny

The court also examined restrictions surrounding Khan’s meetings with his family. Justice Waheed questioned why meetings between the PTI founder and his sisters were being restricted, observing that such meetings were a fundamental right.

The Islamabad advocate general told the court that Khan had met his sisters 48 times during the past three years. The bench ordered authorities to provide complete details of those meetings, along with information about his meetings and communications with his sons, including call detail records.

The issue of media interactions after family meetings also came under discussion. The court said PTI and Khan’s family would have to provide an undertaking that there would be no media talk after meetings with the former premier.

Justice Afghan urged PTI members not to politicise Khan’s medical condition, while the bench also warned about possible contempt proceedings if court directions concerning meetings were violated.

Government Says It Will Implement Order

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhary said the government would implement the Supreme Court’s order “in letter and spirit.”

Speaking to Geo News, Chaudhary said decisions concerning Khan’s release, health and other legal matters rested with the judiciary. He maintained that the government’s differences with the PTI founder were political rather than personal and said the government wished him good health.

The minister also rejected any suggestion that the government had neglected Khan’s medical needs, saying he had been provided with medical facilities even without an appeal from his party.

Sister Granted Meeting With Khan

Meanwhile, Khan’s sister Noreen Niazi was allowed to meet him at Adiala jail. The meeting took place in the conference room and lasted approximately 45 minutes, according to jail sources.

Niazi reportedly briefed Khan about the Supreme Court’s decision before leaving the jail. She later declined to speak to reporters at the Dahgal checkpoint, confirming only that the meeting had taken place.

Khan’s other sisters, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, also reached the checkpoint but were stopped by police from proceeding further. Aleema welcomed the Supreme Court’s order, saying the family had been seeking hospital treatment for Khan for months.

Next Hearing Set for September 16

The Supreme Court has directed authorities to submit Khan’s complete medical record, details of his meetings during the past three years and information concerning his communications with his sons before the next hearing.

Adiala jail officials have also been summoned to appear before the court. The case has been adjourned until September 16, when the court is expected to review Khan’s medical situation and the implementation of its directions.
