News Analysis |

Pakistan Peoples Party’s chairman Asif Ali Zardari claimed that he is ready to put himself in driving seat, to steer Pakistan out of trouble after beating his opponents in the 2018 general elections.

He seems convinced that his party will win the next general elections in Pakistan and is in full preparation to contest the elections.

While addressing a rally in Nawabshah on Sunday, following the footsteps of other rival party leaders-Imran Khan and Shehbaz Sharif, Zardari claims that his party will sweep the next general elections. He intends to continue his work to make Sindh a model province, after coming into power again. Moreover, PPP is determined to provide employment opportunities and jobs on merit, in the process seeking highest rate of employment.

Disapproving PML-N over its dismissal performance, especially for taking record debt, failing to improve governance and causing huge loss to exchequer after dismissal performance of public enterprises [Railways, PIA and Steel Mill], Zardari held the Pakistan Muslim League –Nawaz (PML-N) government accountable for the state of the country.

On contrary to Zardari’s claims, the overall performance of Sindh has not been exemplary, and province has faced widespread disparity in its living standards. Sindh government is criticized over death of kids in Tharparkar where children have been dying with malnutrition. Life-threatening diseases are rampant which kills hundreds of children in this region alone. Though, there has been an upgrade in hospitals across Sindh. For example, medical facilities have been provided in Mirpurkhas, Mithi, and Umarkot etc and the number of beds has increased. But, the overall situation remains bleak. Karachi’s filth has enraged the whole nation, despite promises; situation is yet to be improved.

Critics believe that PPP leadership had nothing concrete to present, when it comes to healthcare, education, and agriculture, and industry, public transport in urban areas. People are deprived of their rudimentary requirements and injustice is widespread and police are used for political victimization.

Any major improvement in infrastructure or in cultural aspects is not seen in the province. Though, the party has kept the slogan of Bhutto alive all over the country, but, the essence of his ideology and doctrines are yet to be implemented even after passing, much praised-18th amendment.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari made many claims to uproot the poverty, income disparity and reform the agriculture system of Punjab. But, PPP’s inability to demonstrate its development model in Sindh makes it difficult for the people to believe in party’s hollow claims. Even electable are reluctant to join the party in Punjab.

Zardari may still be able to make government in Sindh, due to the absence of any mainstream party in Sindh, but, it remains a distant reality to see Zardari making inroads in Punjab and KP.
