People edit Maryam Nawaz’s Wikipedia profile to ‘political criminal”

News Desk |

The online encyclopedia, ‘Wikipedia’ has locked the profile page of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader, Maryam Nawaz Sharif after several attempts were made to introduce abusive edits in her profile following the ‘Avenfield verdict’.

The NAB officials have arrested Capt. Safdar while Maryam Nawaz along with her father Nawaz Sharif is due to reach Lahore from London on Friday, 13th July.

The online website has locked the page for a year. A representative of Wikipedia talking to a local news outlet stated, “This is not the first time her page has been locked. However, her page has not been locked for this long before,” he said.

He told words like ‘political criminal’ and ‘Pakistani Politician’ were added in her description and biography. “People added criminal multiple times in the lead section and tried to change her birth year from 1973 to 1960. The information present in the lead section appears in the Google knowledge graph, next to the search result.”

“Maryam’s Wikipedia profile has been getting 1,000 unique hits since January. We received around 15,000 unique hits yesterday,” the representative added further.

Following such attempts, the protection of the page has been set to ‘protect’ mode. It will now become difficult for the people to make abusive edits on her profile. Similarly, the protection of her father’s page Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has been changed from semi-protect to “protect” mode.

The Wikipedia is ensuring regulation of the profiles of other Pakistani politicians as well including Asif Ali Zardari and Imran Khan.

The Nawaz Sharif and his children, Maryam, Hussain, and Hassan were convicted in the Avenfield reference case for owing assets beyond means on Friday 6th July 2018.  Nawaz Sharif has been awarded a 10 years imprisonment following Maryam Nawaz’s conviction of 7years. The NAB also convicted the husband of Mariam Nawaz, Capt Safdar, for a year, for misleading the court in the case. The NAB officials have arrested Capt. Safdar while Maryam Nawaz along with her father Nawaz Sharif is due to reach Lahore from London on Friday, 13th July.
